C'est une idée lumineuse de sortir une compilation de titres composés par Billy Strayhorn (ou en collaboration avec Ellington). Tant de merveilles sont dues à sa plume, à commencer par Take the A train, l'indicatif même de l'orchestre, Clementine et Chlo-e qu'utilisera Vian dans ses romans, ou encore Lush life que sublimera Coltrane (ce dernier est interprété par Kay Davis avec Billy Strayhorn au piano pour tout accompagnement). Les versions des autres morceaux sont dues à l'orchestre du Duke ou à de petites formations ellingtoniennes, à l'exception de Halfway to dawn et Tailspin, Strayhorn étant soliste dans ces deux derniers.
