Le compact démarre sur les chapeaux de roue avec Smada, une composition de Billy Strayhorn, où Jimmy Hamilton prend son envol. Belle version de Black and tan fantasy avec Russell Procope, Ray Nance et Quentin Jackson. Vient ensuite une version de How high the moon très be-bop. Serious serenade donne le loisir d'apprécier la sonorité chaude d'Harry Carney, soliste du morceau. C'est au tour de Britt Woodman de faire la démonstration de son talent et de sa dextérité dans Theme for Trambean. Take the A train est surtout intéressant pour l'improvisation de Paul Gonsalves, suivant les changements de tempo. Une soirée de plus, sans surprise mais agréable, en compagnie du Duke. |

La noblesse de l'arrangement fait de Princess bluesdu grand art. Just scratchin' the surface avec son thème aussi swinguant que hachuré, puis Happy reunion permettent à Paul Gonsalves de présenter ses deux facettes : d'abord fougueux, puis sentimental. Mr. Gentle and Mr. Cool introduit Ray Nance au violon et Shorty Baker. Dans Hi fi fo fum Sam Woodyard nous fait la démonstration de ce que devrait être plus souvent un solo de batterie, c'est à dire rester dans le tempo et l'esprit du morceau plutôt que de servir de démonstration des capacités techniques d'un drummer. Les deux géants du saxophone baryton, Harry Carney et Gerry Mulligan s'affrontent dans Prima bara dubla. Johnny Hodges nous envoûte avec Multicolored blue, entre blues et ballade, sur fond d'orchestration somptueuse. Enfin Mahalia Jackson nous offre un moment de grâce dans Come Sunday, avant d'enchaîner passionnellement Keep your hand on the plow (un traditionnel). Ce concert d'Ellington au son excellent (sauf pour Keep your hand on the plow) est à posséder, de préférence en version double Cd. |

Un bon album d'une époque déjà riche en enregistrements publics, qui n'apporte rien de nouveau mais s'écoute agréablement. A noter un long medley de 13 morceaux qui fait la part belle au piano et où l'on peut entre autres apprécier Jimmy Woode sur Satin doll. La prise de son et la pêche n'ont pas la splendeur d'un NEWPORT 58 de la même année. Le disque se termine par le morceau le plus excitant de celui-ci, Diminuendo and crescendo in blue, avec un Paul Gonsalves égal à lui-même, c'est à dire excellent. |

Duke, en véritable "Monsieur Loyal", introduit les tours de sa troupe : Harry Carney (Sophisticated lady), Johnny Hodges (Jeep's blues), San Woodyard (Hi fi fo fum), Paul Gonsalves (pour un Diminuendo malheureusement shunté). |

Dans une ambiance de club, l'orchestre distille un swing souple et aérien d'un bout à l'autre de l'album. Plusieurs pièces sont jouées ici pour la première fois, dont Flirtibird, qui sera reprise l'année suivante pour la B.O. d'Anatomy of a murder. Johnny Hodges est soliste dans la plupart des plages. Nouvelle et magnifique version de Mr. Gentle and Mr. Cool avec Harol Baker (trompette) et Ray Nance (violon). Un disque superbe à ranger sans honte à côté du Newport de la même année. |

Retour au Blue Note ! Bien loin des festivals ou bals et de la routine, l'atmosphère de ce haut lieu du jazz semble galvaniser les musiciens qui jouent avec décontraction, entrain et émotion. Les moments forts ? Le double cd tout entier, à commencer par l'entrée au piano de Billy Strayhorn sur Take the A train, le très bopisant Newport up, les divers extraits de la bande originale d'Anatomy of a murder, ou les nombreuses plages dévolues à Johnny Hodges. Mais aussi les duos pianistiques du Duke et de Strayhorn (Drawing room blues et Tonk), ou le flamboyant El Gato, qui pert ici son côté carnavalesque pour se transformer en un affrontement surchauffé entre les trompettes (Cat Anderson, Shorty Baker et Ray Nance). Evidemment on entend aussi un peu les gens, le bruit de verres, mais cela fait partie de l'ambiance du club. Et l'on entend également les exclamations de Duke aux musiciens. Une cuvée spéciale ! |
