Les principaux solistes sont Jimmy Hamilton dans Tenderly, Johnny Hodges dans All of me, Jeep's blues et I got it bad ainsi que Paul Gonsalves dans Laura et Diminuendo. Le medley est centré sur des pages devenues historiques. Ray Nance chante avec beaucoup de désinvolture et d'humour It don't mean a thing, quant à Duke, il se fait narrateur dans Pretty and the wolf. Parmi les nombreuses versions de Diminuendo depuis Newport 1956, celle-ci se distingue par la qualité de prise de son, d'une grande pureté. |

On the sunny side of the street / Goin' to Chicago / Sent for you yesterday / You can't run around / Red carpet. C’est un orchestre relâché qui accompagne Jimmy Rushing, ex-chanteur de l’orchestre de Count Basie, blues-shooter à la voix chaude et éraillée, dans une ambiance de fête frisant la jam-session. Sent for you yesterday se transforme en rock and roll enflammé et se termine sur fond de public en délire. Après quatre morceaux en compagnie de "Mr. Five by Five", le maître reprend son orchestre en main pour une interprétation de Red carpet (tiré de Toot suite) dans laquelle brillent les interventions de Russell Procope à la clarinette et surtout de Booty Wood avec une démonstration de trombone wha-wha qui est une véritable pièce d’anthologie. |

(Cd LCR / 33C38 7680) 1961 - Europe Take the A train / Medley : I got it bad and that ain't good - Things ain't what they used to be / West indian pancake / Medley : Black and tan fantasy - Creole love call - The mooche / Soul call / Open house / Rockin' in rhythm / Jam with Sam / Adlib on Nippon / C jam blues / The hawk talks. Le premier medley offre un tremplin à Johnny Hodges (pendant plus de huit minutes). Le second reprend la trilogie des chef-d'œuvres de l'époque "jungle". Jam with Sam sert de prétexte à la présentation des principaux musiciens, qui improvisent à tour de rôle. Titres consacrés à un soliste : West indian pancake avec Paul Gonsalves et El gato (qui relève plus du numéro de cirque) avec Cat Anderson. Adlib on Nippon, pièce de onze minutes, commence par un long dialogue entre Duke Ellington et John Lamb (contrebasse). Ce morceau aux diverses modulations rythmiques, où l'on peut apprécier Jimmy Hamilton, est le plus intéressant du disque. Cat Anderson est par moments un peu pénible avec ses démonstrations de haute voltige dans l'hyper-aigu. Cet album, au son parfois confus, n'est pas prioritaire. |

Afro bossa est exprimé de manière expressive qui pourrait faire songer à un style "jungle" des années soixante. La longue plage Ad lib on Nippon permet de savourer le talent d'Ellington et de Jimmy Hamilton, quant à Chelsea bridge, ce morceau nous offre un Gonsalves au son profond et moelleux qui n'est pas sans rappeler un certain Coleman Hawkins. Toujours Gonsalves, flirtant avec le blues sur Happy-go-lucky local. En fait de Black, Brown and Beige, c'est le premier mouvement (Black) de la suite qui est interprété ici. Il en existe de plus chaleureuses versions. Le son général souffre de la froideur du numérique (son trop sec, manque de profondeur et trop d'aigu). |

Duke en trio avec John Lamb (basse) et Louie Bellson (batterie), accompagnés par le Boston Pops Orchestra sous la direction d’Arthur Fiedler (arrangements : Richard Hayman). Difficile de plébisciter ces plages : Caravan ne manque pas de lourdeur et le passage entre l’orchestre et le trio n’est pas des plus réussis. Mood indigo, composition raffinée, exige de l’espace et de la souplesse mais non cette rigueur métronométrique. The mooche, sans sa trompette qui growle, semble amputé. J’arrête là l’énumération des défaillances plage par plage. Même Louie Bellson, d’ordinaire excellent, semble à l’étroit, ses shabadas ont quelque chose de mécanique. Tout ceci n’a rien à voir avec l’univers d’Ellington. Ici la magie a disparu. Pour la rencontre de son répertoire avec des orchestres symphoniques, allez donc fouiner dans la partie "Hommages". |

Mis à part Imagine my frustration et Cottontail où Duke est au piano, les autres pièces sont enregistrées en compagnie du trio d'Ella Fitzgerald (Jimmy Jones, Joe Comfort et Gus Johnson) soutenu par l'orchestre d'Ellington. Tout au long de l'enregistrement Ella a une voix mordante, au swing communicatif. Nous retiendrons en particulier Something to live for à l'interprétation pleine de grâce et Cottontail où elle se livre à un scat torride en affrontant un Paul Gonsalves pas moins échauffé. |
