Adelaïde HALL : HALL OF ELLINGTON (30 cm EMI / SCX 6586) 1976 Just squeeze me / Solitude - I let a song go out of my heart / It don't mean a thing (if it ain't got that swing) / Mood indigo / I'm beginning to see the light / Sophisticated lady / Don't get around much anymore / I got it bad and that ain't good / Prelude to a kiss / Creole love call. Adélaïde Hall, c'est un rêve lointain dans l'univers d'Ellington (1928), où une voix éraillée et fantasque était venue nous bouleverser. Elle n'a plus maintenant cette explosion juvénile, mais a gardé un peu de sa malice. L'accompagnement est sobre et feutré ; une basse ronde et présente, une guitare qui égrène ses accords, un piano fender qui saupoudre le tout. On n'entendra pas tous les jours une version de Don't get around much anymore avec guitare qui sature et rythme funky. On retrouve une évocation de ce lointain souvenir de 1928 avec Creole love call (où la guitare wha-wha remplace la trompette de Bubber Milley), poignant et bluesy à souhait, non sans charme. |

Cet album apporte une coloration inhabituelle pour ce répertoire, puisque le quintet comprend, entre autres, flûte, guitare et violoncelle (pratiqué à l'archet) : l'orchestre de chambre pour jazz est né ! Les morceaux s'enchaînent afin de former la suite. Ils sont revivifiés par une orchestration et une interprétation plus modernes, surtout lors des interventions d'Eric Dolphy au saxophone alto |

Accompagnée par le Monty Alexander Trio. Duke Ellington avait su en son temps se servir de voix classiques (Kay Davis) mais en les utilisant dans des morceaux spécifiques. Ici l'osmose s'opère plus dans les morceaux raffinés comme Mood indigo ou In a sentimental mood que dans ceux trop swingants ou bluesy. Barbara Hendricks commence à se relâcher un peu vers le milieu du Cd et le swing opère mieux, mais elle devrait éviter de scatter. La fin nous offre quand même quelques perles : Sophisticated lady et Creole love call Voir également "Hommages en images". |
