Voici une osmose du swing et de la musique, dite "grande", parfaitement réussie. Take the A train sonne par moment comme du Gershwin orchestral. Sophisticated lady est transformé en une véritable oeuvre classique, pleine de lyrisme et de profondeur. Harlem, longue fresque en forme de concerto grosso, abolit les frontières entre jazz et classique ; cette version est somptueuse. Ad lib on Nippon est un autre moment fort.
Le travail d'orchestration et d'arrangement dû à Luther Henderson est remarquable. Principaux solistes : Clark Terry (trompette), Joe Lavano (sax ténor), Joshua Redman (sax ténor), Bobby Watson (sax alto), Regina Carter (violon).
