Voici les bandes son originales de trois films tournés avec Duke Ellington : Black and tan (1929) : Ici la musique se mêle aux dialogues des comédiens, les morceaux eux-mêmes s'entrecroisent pour donner vie à cette succession de scènes où interviennent danseurs et choeurs. Le film se termine par le Hall Johnson Choir qui se joint à l'orchestre pour un Black and tan fantasy magistral. A bundle of blues (1933) : L'image fait cruellement défaut face à la gaîté et la couleur de la musique. Ive Anderson interprète Stormy weather avec émotion et sensibilité. Symphony in black [a rhapsody of negro life] (1935) : Bien avant Harlem ou My People voici une fresque sur la vie des gens de couleur, et la première suite d'Ellington. Celui-ci puise dans son propre répertoire pour former les différents tableaux (Dance est basé sur Ducky wucky, Blues sur Saddest tale et Harlem rhythm sur Merry-go-round). C'est Billie Holiday qui chante Saddest tale. Un document rare et passionnant ! |
