La première prestation commence par Blutopia avec son rythme élastique qui oscille entre ballade et swing. Il faut retenir de ce double Cd Perfume suite avec ses quatre parties, Air conditioned jungle pour Jimmy Hamilton et I ain't got nothin' but the blues pour le contre-chant de Kay Davis derrière Al Hibbler (unique morceau où celui-ci n'est pas sirupeux). La séance du 14 avril 1945 se déroule dans une ambiance "musique classique" où la section rythmique est presque inexistante et où les morceaux s'enchaînent sans interruption comme pour ne former qu'une seule pièce en plusieurs mouvements (Chant for FDR, correspondant à Come Sunday, est un hommage à Franklin Roosevelt). Ces programmes radiophoniques sont restitués sans coupure et nous pouvons entendre le présentateur annoncer Duke et son orchestre entre chaque morceau : il suffit de fermer les yeux et d'écouter pour avoir l'illusion d'entendre le Duke en direct ! Qualité de son très appréciable. |

Way low est un autre chef-d'œuvre de cet opus. |

Le répertoire de Duke est si riche que celui-ci peut de semaine en semaine modeler le contenu de ses passages radiophoniques, ce qui ne l'empêche pas d'y incorporer les succès du jour. Mais certains, comme ici Sentimental journey, deviennent du "Ellington". Et puis l'on peut entendre pour la centième fois Black & tan fantasy ou Harlem air shaft sans s'en lasser. Le public du 5 mai est tout dévoué à Duke et ne cache pas son enthousiasme. La prestation de Jimmy Hamilton à la clarinette dans Air conditioned jungle mérite d'être mentionnée. |
